Subtleties and superlatives: Holo Audio Cyan 2 R2R DAC Review

Subtleties and superlatives:
My Holo Audio Cyan 2 R2R DAC Review —
So, like all things audio related, terms and conditions apply. When listening to DACs, especially high-end DACs (in all their various guises), it’s important to remember that unlike transducers and then amplifiers, the differences are not particularly dramatic. So, for the purposes of the Cyan 2, my comparisons will be with the comparably priced, FPGA-driven Chord Qutest (although I will mention the flagship Delta/Sigma DACs from ESS and AKM).
The party piece of the C2 is most certainly it’s dynamic range. It’s astonishing. While still being extremely detailed, the Qutest is fairly mellow and smooth. The C2 is not mellow like a 14yr old Collie. It’s bouncy and energetic like a puppy springer Spaniel. It moves around the dynamic range with speed and gusto, bringing to life even the most placid of recordings. If you’re worried it’s fatiguing, it isn’t. It’s fantastic! Unlike an ESS Sabre, which can be sharp and dry, the C2 retains its musicality even with its hightened energy.
Detail retrieval and separation are on par with the Qutest and it doesn’t really mess with the timbre of the amp or transducers. This part of DAC rolling I really like! If you require this ability however, you may want to look at the Mojo2 with it’s amazing on-board DSP.
Because of its astonishing abilities with dynamics, its reproduction of decay in recordings is the best I’ve heard to date. Be it on Fink’s ‘Biscuits’ live, or Diana Krall ‘in Paris’, the decay of the percussion is audible until the very last moment it stops ringing. This adds huge depth to the music.
For those of you who’ve also heard a large variety of DACs, the Cyan 2 combines my* preferred qualities of all DAC types; the raw detail retrieval of an ESS Sabre, the musicality of a Rob Watts FPGA and the balance of an AKM, but then adds the best dynamic capabilities on the market today and in turn, for £1200, produces a product nearly every bit as good as my podium DAC, the Chord Hugo TT2/M Scaler combo. For 6x the price, the Chord stack betters the Cyan 2 in musicality alone. This is deeply impressive.
